Here at Time Out, we have strong ideas about what makes a great city. We're talking about lively neighbourhoods, vibrant food, drink, and nightlife scenes, and the promise of something new on every corner. And if there's one thing we must add to the list, it's this: green spaces.

Whether it's a sprawling park, a flower garden, or a community patch around the block, green spaces are welcome respites from the concrete jungle. There's good research out there that suggests that even a couple of minutes in nature a day can increase creativity, productivity, and well-being, too.

If you're looking to visit (or move to) a beautiful and green city, then here's some new research by the global digital platform Freepik. The company analysed Google reviews across the world's 100 most populous cities to determine which have the most green space attractions. It went a step further to determine which of these green spaces are visited most.

And guess what? Tokyo knocked it out of the park. The ultra-modern Japanese capital has 159 parks and nature-related attractions, more than double the runner-up, London, which has 78 green spaces. However, Tokyo only ranks 11th for the city with the most-visited green space attractions. That's your cue to check out Time Out Tokyo's recommendations for the best parks and gardens – they include spaces like Yoyogi Park, dubbed as Tokyo's answer to New York Central Park, and Ueno Park, which should be awash in pink now that it's cherry blossom season.

The next greenest city in Asia is Singapore (No. 4 worldwide), which prides itself as a City in a Garden. Considering this tiny nation has to fit a population of 6 million, it's frankly impressive that it has 55 parks and green attractions. The most famous of its parks? Gardens by the Bay with its Avatar-like 'Supertrees' and two cooled conservatories. Don't overlook the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Singapore Botanic Gardens, and the many lovely neighbourhood parks and gardens

Japan's cities dominate the rest of Asia's top 10 list, but Southeast Asia is well-represented by the likes of Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Jakarta.

Here are 10 cities in Asia with the most green spaces:

  1. Tokyo, Japan (No. 1)
  2. Singapore (No. 4)
  3. Seoul, South Korea (No. 17)
  4. Fukuoka, Japan (No. 18)
  5. Osaka, Japan (No. 21)
  6. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (No. 46)
  7. Mumbai, India (No. 48)
  8. Bangkok, Thailand (No. 50)
  9. Jakarta, Indonesia (No. 66)
