Nationale Opera & Ballet

The Nationale Opera & Ballet (formerly Muziektheater) is Amsterdam at its most ambitious. This plush, crescent-shaped building, which opened in 1986, has room for 1,596 people and is home to both the Dutch National Ballet and the Dutch National Opera, though the stage is also used by visiting companies. The lobby's panoramic glass walls offer impressive views out over the River Amstel. The Nationale Opera & Ballet has a reputation for high-quality performances at good prices – tickets go on sale three months in advance and often sell out, so it's advisable to book early.
