There is a surprisingly large number of old boozers in North Adelaide (forget the ‘City of Churches’ – this is the ‘City of Pubs’). The Dan is a stalwart, with just the right amount of Irishness. Yes, you can get a Guinness at the bar and there’s plenty of timber panelling, but that’s where the theme-pub kitsch ends. The thrust here is good food, live music and kick-arse SA wines. Check out gargantuan pepper tree in the beergarden – 170 years old if it’s a day. Thursday night is trivia night, with the bonus of $15 schnitzels.
