Providing a new option in the park – it opened September 2015 – is Zaina Lodge. The brochure describes Zaina Lodge as ‘West Africa’s first luxury safari lodge’. And true to the blurb, the lodge elegantly blends a safari sensibility with modern amenities, but all with ecological business practices. Zaina staff can organise all the logistical issues, including transfers from Accra and guides, before visiting.
There are 25 rooms – each with private balconies – across the 12 chalets that overlook the the savannah and two waterholes. A hand-constructed thatched roof, framed with sustainably raised plantation teak, overarches each suite.
Other facilities include an infinity pool, an open bar and a fire-pit. Outdoor showers are also on offer. The food offering is particularly good with dishes including roast chicken, deep-fried eggplant and tomato salsa, pork chops with grilled vegetables and beetroot carpaccio.
Wildlife is the real reason to visit of course, and the expert guides will take you on game drives to see animals including kobs, waterbuck, roan antelope, baboons, patas monkeys and guinea fowl and the park’s famous elephants.
