11 October 2022: Colonia Americana in Guadalajara in Mexico has been named the Coolest Neighbourhood in the World to visit right now by Time Out, the global media and hospitality brand, which helps people explore and experience the best of the city. Time Out today has released its annual list of trending areas of global cities for people to explore and discover on their travels. The full list can be found here
Cais do Sodré in Lisbon has been named as Time Out’s second coolest neighbourhood in the world right now, and Wat Bo Village in Siem Reap in Cambodia is at number three. Time Out’s top five Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World list is completed by Ridgewood in New York (4) and Mile End in Montreal (5).
James Manning, Travel Editor at Time Out, explains why the Guadalajara neighbourhood of Colonia Americana deserves its top ranking this year: “Mexico has ranked among the world’s coolest travel destinations for a few years now, but Guadalajara is just emerging as a must-visit – and Colonia Americana is the place to be right now. It’s home to a boundary-pushing creative community, a growing number of amazing places to eat, and some of the best nightlife in the western hemisphere. And the street life is unbeatable.”

The philosophy behind Time Out’s list is to help travellers and residents get under the skin of the world’s most distinctive city neighbourhoods right now, as Dave Calhoun, Chief Content Officer North America & UK at Time Out, explains; “Each year we ask our international Time Out audience and our global team of local Time Out experts to nominate the areas of cities right now which have the best mix of cutting-edge culture, affordable food and drink, street life, nightlife and community. They are not homogenised, corporate destinations but areas which have an independent and welcoming vibe”. He adds; “You may be able to walk across them in half an hour or less but they are packed with enough experiences to spend days exploring”.
It’s the first time that a neighbourhood in Guadalajara has made Time Out’s Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World list, which is now in its fifth year. As well as Guadalajara, neighbourhoods in Siem Reap, Santiago, Doha, Brisbane, Margate, Nairobi, Marseilles, Sheffield, Naples, Auckland, Puerto Vallarta, San Juan, San José (Costa Rica) and San Diego have all made the list this year for the first time.
