Penny-pinching doesn’t have to mean missing out on new release flicks. We’ve done the hard yards and found cheap cinema tickets right across Melbourne, from discounted days to epic movie club perks. Now with all that cash you’ve saved, you might be able to splurge on a choc top – because what’s a movie without a little treat?

Consider yourself a cinephile? Make sure you check out all of Melbourne’s best-looking cinemas. Or for a movie under the stars, these are Melbourne's best outdoor cinemas.

Where to see flicks for cheap

  • Melbourne

This CBD cinema runs a whopper deal for cinema-goers. See your next arthouse flick or blockbuster on a Tuesday, when you can get $10 tickets as a Movie Club member or $12 as a casual. The larger Palace cinema group also runs a $12 ticket special at select cinemas on Tuesdays for casuals.

The Astor Theatre
  • Film
  • St Kilda

The Astor is a cinema in the grand, old manner – meaning it’s actually the last single-screen cinema of its kind in continuous operation in Melbourne. You can revel in the glory of this beautiful relic with cheap tickets throughout the week: there are $18 tickets on Magic Mondays and Fantastic Thursdays.

Discount day at Hawthorn’s Lido Cinema is Tuesday, where it’s $8 tickets for members and $12 for non-members. On Wednesdays, students can claim $8 tickets all day. Seniors can get $10 tickets before 4pm on weekdays if they're members, and $12 tickets if they're not members.

If you sign up for an annual Lido Membership ($22 per year for adults) you’ll also score generous discounts on tickets, invitations to members-only preview screenings and more.  This membership can also be used at Classic Cinemas in Elsternwick and Cameo Cinemas in Belgrave.

  • Things to do

They say the best things in life are free. We're not 100 per cent on board with that sentiment (have you had a perfectly prepared cocktail? That ain't cheap), but not everything in Melbourne has to cost a bunch of money. From art shows to wine tastings, there are a bunch of things to do in this fine city that you can do for free. Yep, free. Zilch. Nada. Zero dollars.
