Taking acclaimed playwright Hideki Noda's version of Shakespeare's 'Richard III' and giving it a multilingual, multidisciplinary touch, Singaporean director Ong Keng Sen made waves with his 'Sandaime Richard' at the World Theatre Festival Shizuoka earlier this year. Starring young kabuki hope Kazutaro Nakamura, kyogen (traditional comic theatre) actor Doji Shigeyama and former stars from the all-female Takarazuka Revue who specialised in male roles, Ong's 'Sandaime' brings together cast and staff from Japan, Singapore and Indonesia while also incorporating modern music, lighting and video. If you're into contemporary theatre, don't miss this chance to witness one of the most remarkable plays performed in Tokyo this year.
