Oakland-born 'Third Wave' coffee pioneer Blue Bottle has been a massive hit in Tokyo ever since setting up shop in Kiyosumi last February, with a second branch opened in Aoyama only a couple of weeks after the first location was launched. Although queues still occasionally form at both of these shops on weekends, further expansion of the brand hasn't been an entirely painless process: Blue Bottle was forced to give up on its planned Daikanyama shop when fellow Bay Area brand Tartine Bakery pulled out. Things are looking up in 2016, however, with a Roppongi café scheduled to open in autumn, and this Shinjuku outpost having started business in March. Located inside the new, strangely christened Newoman complex, Blue Bottle Shinjuku finally brings founder James Freeman's coffee magic to Tokyo's west side.
