The Nakamura Keith Haring Collection is the world’s first museum dedicated solely to the work of Keith Haring. Composed entirely of curator Kazuo Nakamura’s private collection, the museum follows the theme ‘Keith Haring’s World: From Chaos to Hope’. Nakamura’s first encounter with Haring’s work was on December 28th, 1987, while he was on a business trip to New York. His collection began with the purchase of ‘People’s Ladder’ from a New York gallery. The museum, which was designed by architect Atsushi Kitagawara, not only serves to display Haring’s works, but it also embodies Haring’s message. The building’s use of light and dark creates a space that is able to transport patrons’ thoughts back to the time period when Haring was active as an artist.
