This fascinating place is dedicated to photography in all its forms. Part gallery, it showcases the work of 19th and 20th century photography masters as well as 4,000 works by contemporary photographers. But it’s also about photography as a form of documentation, and has extensive collections in the fields of fashion, architecture, medicine, security and industry. These really give an insight into Swiss society and history, from a collection of police photographs to another documenting the construction of a dam and a third on medical photography. In addition to the permanent collections the Fotomuseum stages a series of temporary displays, meaning there’s always something new to see here. If you want to take your interest further, there are seminars and events as part of an on-site Centre of Photography, which also houses a library and bistro.
