“When I read books or listen to music in the library’s yard, I feel like I am in the 1970s. The building’s facade looks quite old, but the inside is equipped with modern facilities, which makes it convenient to look up materials. When I was writing Moving-In Day and Four Seasons Deco Life, I used to come here every day.”
Three favorite places in Seoul
“Located in Gwanghwamun, where long-standing traditions and modern skyscrapers coexist, coming here feels like being in an oasis in the city. Andre Fu, an interior designer from Hong Kong who is famous for his minimalistic designs,
created the hotel’s restaurants, Kioku and Yu Yuan. The Charles H Bar was designed by AvroKO, who got people’s attention by recreating 1920s New York in Seoul.”
“I visit here quite often not only because it’s close to my house, but also because it features 15,000 rare design books. The library’s exterior was constructed in a method similar to a traditional Korean house. The entrance was built with black bricks and the windows and crossbeams are covered in Korean paper, translating the beauty of traditional architecture into something modern.”
Before it’s hot
“This gallery, located near Seoul Forest, has recently started to gain attention. It’s a hub where you can enjoy works by famous European and American artists. I go here often for pleasure and for inspiration. Alex Kat, whose kitschy works are known for their audacious compositions and intense colors, is currently having an exhibition at this location.”
Recommendati on for out-of-town visitors
“Here, you can see just how large S.M. Entertainment is. The luxurious marble floor and its black wooden details reminds me of a five-star hotel. It is also worth paying attention to how creatively they describe the objects,
which feature SM artists.”
