Although an influential figure in the Korean abstract painting scene, Cho Yong-ik was slowly forgotten due to his break from the art world while dealing with paralysis. He made a dramatic comeback in November 2015 when his work was sold at three times the asking price at Christie’s Hong Kong, bringing Korean monochromatic art to the attention of the international art world. Cho once said: “The canvas should reflect a humble silence.” This exhibit reflects this philosophy with works made from countless repeated strokes of monochrome paint that silently fill the canvas.
