Screaming teenage girls shimmied alongside more seasoned gig-goers at a packed Roseland Ballroom Monday night for the first set of a three-night stint from Grammy-winning New Zealander Lorde. The 17-year-old’s appeal reaches wide, and her rapid ascension in the music world is surely making it more challenging for her to convincingly assert that she has “never seen a diamond in the flesh,” as she does on mega-hit “Royals.”
Still, Lorde unassumingly sauntered onto a minimalist Roseland stage Monday and proceeded to dance frenetically as if nobody was watching. Displaying a confidence and stage presence that ridiculously belie her age—seriously, were we doing anything remotely close to this when we were 17?—Lorde ran through every song on her chart-topping debut, Pure Heroine, and also added a cover of the Replacements’ “Swingin’ Party.” Enjoy two more nights of her performances at the soon-to-close Roseland.
