No umbrellas were required at
Randalls Island Park on Friday for the kickoff of Governors Ball 2014—though some attendees brought them along anyway as
fashion accessories. In stark contrast to last year’s
Gov Ball storm-and-slide, the skies were blue and spirits were high as thousands of music fans enjoyed sets from Phoenix, TV on the Radio, Damon Albarn, Grimes, Julian Casablancas and the Voidz, La Roux and OutKast. The masses were downright giddy as the reunited Atlanta hip-hop duo of Big Boi and André 3000 performed hits from its 20-year career—and there is nothing like seeing a sea of New Yorkers “shake it like a Polaroid picture.” The three-day fest continues on Saturday with performances from Jack White, Spoon, Broken Bells, Chance the Rapper, Disclosure and the Strokes.
