Built in 1883 as a private apartment building, the Chelsea has a long and infamous past—not surprising considering it’s been home to artists and writers of every stripe since it opened a year later. From Lost Weekend author Charles R. Jackson’ suicide to Nancy Spungen’s fatal stabbing, it has been the site of several sordid events. The hotel was sold to a developer in spring 2011 and is currently not taking reservations for short-term guests; visit hotelchelsea.com for updates.
