January might not be the jam-packed extravaganza of gigs and club nights that the rest of the year often offers, but there’s four Fridays of fun to look forward to at Brixton’s Phonox. Renowned electronic group Mount Kimble will be in residence at the venue, kicking off every weekend for four weeks in January. The nights are billed as ‘a testament to their latest exciting direction’, so expect these curated nights out to be both a voyage through their seminal catalogue so far and a hint at where they could go next.

Underscore is a new series of music and art events, inspired by the MUBI collection and brought to life by Crack Magazine. Its first edition lands at the ICA on January 24, and is all centred around Bird, Andrea Arnold's coming-of-age tale starring Barry Keoghan. Stop by for DJ sets from Carlos O’Connell (of Fontaines D.C. and the film itself) and Space Afrika, alongside a showcase of never-seen-before on-set photography by Robbie Ryan and Atsushi Nishijima.

Returning for 2025 – ten years after it first debuted at the London Coliseum – here’s a fresh chance to catch noted Gilbert & Sullivan head Mike Leigh’s 2015 ENO production of the duo’s beloved light operetta The Pirates of Penzance. Although legendary for his devised films and plays, that’s obviously not a quality Leigh brought to bear on his take on the 1879 classic, and it’s actually a pretty trad production. But that’s no bad thing at all for this delightful, family-friendly show about a kind-hearted apprentice pirate intent on wooing the daughter of the inept Major General. Suitable for ages five-plus.
