The NYLA resident commissioned artist explores the civil-rights movements in two programs. "When the Wolves Came In," inspired by Max Roach’s 1960 protest album, We Insist: Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite, is a repertory collection that celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 20th anniversary of the abolishment of apartheid in South Africa. The Watershed, an evening-length work for nine dancers, explores cross-cultural fights for freedom from the Civil War to the present day.
