Greenlight Bookstore
A relative newcomer (it opened in 2009), this comfy Brooklyn shop has become a haven for the borough's book lovers, and a place where you might find local luminaries like Jennifer Egan perusing the shelves. What's more, the store is not just selling physical wares: Its also building a literary community with regular readings and rousing events. On Wednesday 10, join intrepid journalist Ben Westhoff as he leads a boozy discussion and a tour of the best Fort Greene dive bars. 686 Fulton St at South Portland Ave, Fort Greene, Brooklyn (718-246-0200, greenlightbookstore.com)

New works from local authors
Two novels by two fantastic NYC scribes hit stores this week: Paul Auster's insightful Sunset Park, chronicling the lives of four broke twentysomethings in a Brooklyn squat; and Nicole Krauss's haunting Great House, about a group of individuals who share fragile connections of sorrow and loss. Krauss reads at the 92nd Street Y on Monday 8, while Auster leafs through his latest tome at Barnes & Noble Union Square on November 17. 92nd Street Y, 1395 Lexington Ave at 92nd St (212-415-5500, 92y.org) * Barnes & Noble, 33 E 17th St between Broadway and Park Ave South (212-253-0810, barnesandnoble.com)

The Moth
You still never know who's going to kill at this unscripted storytelling series: On any given evening, you could hear from Jonathan Ames or a bartender whose tale of debauchery has the crowd howling. Witness it for yourself—or toss your own name into the hat and grab the mike—at the next Story Slam on Tuesday 9. Nuyorican Poets Cafe. 236 E 3rd St between Aves B and C (212-505-8183, moth.org). Tue 9: sign-up 7pm, stories begin 7:30pm; free.
