It's said that the Inuit people have 50 words for snow, such is its abundance and pervasive influence on everyday life. We think this is rather poetic, and in the hope of making the sheer horror of black snow and freezing rain a bit more bearable this winter, we've identified the 12 most prevalent types of New York snow—from the kind that eats away at your soul, to the snow that makes you want to frolic around like a little deer in a magical forest. Remember that? New York looking beautiful in the snow? Without further ado, then…

1. Ah-wow
The very first delicate little flakes on the very first night of snow in New York when you're snuggled up indoors.

2. The Road
No actual precipitation—just piles and piles of two-week-old snow and ice heaped along the sidewalk. Induces despair in all who gaze upon it.

3. Ugghh
Unexpected boot-ruining sleet that comes down in the middle of the day, when you thought you could wear your suede kicks to work. Foolish New Yorker!

4. Plaguesnow
Black snow.

5. Oooo!
Pristine powdery snow in the park that's been packed super tight by legions of toddlers aggressively sledding.

6. Sneaki
The one where it looks like a shallow slush puddle, and you step in it and it goes up past your boots and down, down into your socks. Feeling of horror.

7. Snakki
Fat flakes. Eat them.

8. WTF
Blizzard. Like being smacked around the face repeatedly.

9. Gameofthrones1
Fluffy, magical, glittery flakes swirling around in the moonlight.

10. Gameofthrones2
Pellets of evil hail pelting down. Wretched.

11. Whyohwhy
The type that makes you question your decision to live in New York.

12. Trusnow
The kind you see on pretty Christmas cards, that makes winter okay and hot chocolate taste like heaven. Go get out in it, dear New Yorker! Make snow angels, build adorable Gotham-themed snowmen and snowball fight for all you're worth. You know what happens next…
