[title]
Each week, we take two New Yorkers who swear they're totally undateable, and put our matchmaking skills to the test. Afterward, we find out what went well on their date, and what went horribly, horribly wrong.
Our daters had tacos and drinks at Toloache Thompson ( 205 Thompson St, 212-420-0600)
First impression
Mary Lane: “He had a good-person aura, but I go for outgoing guys, and he didn’t seem super outgoing. I couldn’t tell if he had a hipster beard or just a lazy, hadn’t-shaved beard.”
Ronny: “She has a very bubbly personality—she seemed like more fun than most people. She was generally a pretty lady, so that was cool too.”
Chemistry
Mary Lane: “He seemed more interested in talking about himself than getting to know me, but we warmed up. I had good tequila in my margarita, but it didn’t induce flirting.”
Ronny: “I felt more comfortable with her than I do on most first dates. There were no lulls in the conversation. I don’t normally get chemistry feelings until later on, though.”
Awkward Moment
Mary Lane: “We were waiting for the bathroom, and he told me that he’d once peed his pants on the subway because he didn’t realize how long it would take to get to Washington Heights.”
Ronny: “Someone had suggested the grasshopper tacos to me, so I was like, ‘Let’s try this!’ We got them, but both of us were very afraid to taste it.”
Afterward
Mary Lane: “He didn’t ask for my phone number at the end, but he sent me a Twitter message that said, ‘Sup girl,’ which is kind of my least favorite way to be addressed.”
Ronny: “We hugged goodbye, and she suggested I follow her on Twitter—then we realized we follow each other already! We’ve DMed a few times.”
In three words
Mary Lane: Ronny is "scruffy, funny and quirky."
Ronny: Mary Lane is "funny, outgoing and pretty."
Verdict
Mary Lane: “For somebody I knew nothing about, it went pretty well. He was a totally nice guy, but we weren’t awesomely compatible in any regard.”
Ronny: “She seemed like a very sweet girl—attractive and fun to talk to. I definitely would like to be friends with her and wouldn’t mind a second date.”
