Another week, another plan to fix the subterranean Midtown torture dungeon that is Penn Station.
Governor Cuomo announced his support today for a plan to move Amtrak into a new train hall across Eighth Avenue in the current James A. Farley Post Office (a rendering can be seen above.) The plan has been in the works for years, but Cuomo has now revealed plans to expedite the process. In addition to an unprecedented public-private partnership to fund the $3 billion project, he's also more or less firing the current developers overseeing the job.
The entire project (included Amtrak's new Moynihan Station in the Farley building) is now being referred to as the Empire Station Complex. In addition to moving Amtrak, the plan also calls for renovations to the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit concourses under Madison Square Garden including widening corridors, constructing new waiting areas and letting in more natural light.
Read more about the Governor's proposal here, which is expected to be completed in just three years! Godspeed! A new commuter concourse west of 8th Avenue is scheduled to open this fall, with construction on Amtrak's new train hall to follow.
