When the crew at Dirtybird Records throw a BBQ, they put their pants on one leg at a time and load up on supplies at Costco just like the rest of us. Except once their pants are on and their bulk shopping is done, they spin gold records.

The funky, bass-heavy label, which has helped kickstart the careers of Eats Everything, Catz ’n Dogz, and Julio Bashmore, made the announcement yesterday, midway through National BBQ Week, that their popular multi-city tour will return to grace us with its smoky, dry-rubbed presence for another summer. This year they’ll host parties in Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Denver and one “TBA city,” with different line-ups in each one. Playing in Brooklyn on August 16 will be Shiba San, J.Phlip, Kill Frenzy and big birds and label co-founders Claude VonStroke and Justin Martin, in addition to their dedicated grill man Grillson (as in “You’d better get your hands away from my grill, son.”). In addition, and for the first time, they will host a “Campout” in the first weekend of October.
The label, born out of impromptu parties around a grill in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, releasing a slew of music to ring in the occasion—including Claude VonStroke’s just-released Barrump/Make a Cake 12’’, Justin Martin’s forthcoming sophomore disc Hello Clouds and a tenth anniversary comp of label tracks. Check out some pictures of past BBQs and be sure to purchase tickets online before they sell out, or check out Justin Martin at Output on June 13.
