Back in the day, you could walk up to a stranger in the middle of Times Square and passionately kiss her without incurring a seven-figure lawsuit. That’s how it was on V-J Day in 1945, when World War II officially ended and an iconic photo was snapped. To celebrate the anniversary this month, we asked Glenn Seven Allen and Rachael McOwen, actors from the upcoming Fringe Festival show KNB: The Musical (gorillarep.org)—“a romantical, comical, nautical musical”—to show us how to make out in public while staying classy.
Step 1: Dress the part
The hat is key, though Allen thinks the original smooching sailor had his sailor’s cap tilted way too far back. “It’s supposed to rest about an inch above your eyebrows,” he explains, but the placement apparently didn’t stop the vet from getting some sugar. Says McOwen, “Attractive guys in uniform have some serious sexappeality.”
Step 2: Dip
Any girl (or guy, for that matter) being dipped needs to trust that she won’t be dropped. “Get a good ‘power stance’ like Jack Black in School of Rock,” says Allen. McOwen agrees: “The only two things you really need are a strong man and a girlish foot kick-up.”
Step 3: Smooch
“No tongues, please,” requests Allen. And a breath mint is never a bad idea: “I’ve had a couple stinky leading ladies before,” he says. “Once a costar even came to the show with a cold sore covering half her upper lip!” Which isn’t very celebratory.
Step 4: Detach
Don’t be surprised if sailor boy gets too caught up in the moment and doesn’t want to let go. Of unwanted amorousness, McOwen says, “I can never decide if I should hit-slap-punch or just run away—although there is always the hit-and-run combo. I need to work on this one.” Poor guy was just really pumped about victory in the Pacific.
