Flipping the script on the title of Ralph Ellison's acclaimed novel, Invisible Man, Casteel offers a portrait series of naked African-American men who are most decidely present, laying in repose or seated but always with their gaze leveled at the viewer. Casteel got her MFA at Yale, and like most painters from there, she mixes and matches art-historical styles, with echoes of German Expressionism and the work of Alice Neel.
