The school year is underway, and beginning next week, families will have to make a big decision about the 2020-2021 term

According to an Oct 26 announcement, NYC schools will allow students who are learning remotely to opt into blended learning from Nov 2–Nov 15. This method is both a combination of at-home and in-person learning, and this is timeframe is the only opportunity to make the change. Earlier this year, families expected to have several opportunities to make any adjustments to their children's schedules.

Wondering how to proceed? We highlight the ways parents can get the ball rolling below.

What to do:

Fill out the Learning Preferences Survey between the designated time period, Nov 2–Nov 15, if you wish to have your child transition from remote learning to blended learning.

What happens next?

Schools will make every effort to accommodate students based on capacity requirements. According to the NYC DOE, "Students who change from remote to blended will begin in-person between the weeks of November 30 and December 7, and will be informed by their school their start date and schedule."

What about opting into remote learning?

"Any parent at any point who decides they want to go all remote, they retain that right," the mayor said during a press briefing. "That choice is always there. They can convert their child to all remote at any point, but we just got to know once and for all, how many parents want their kids in school so we can move forward."

Parents will need to fill out the Learning Preferences Survey to transition into fully remote learning.
