One of June's most worthy holidays is National Doughnut Day (sometimes spelled National Donut Day), which falls on the first Friday of the month. The holiday was founded in Chicago in 1938 by the Salvation Army, who chose to honor "doughnut lassies"—the young women who distributed fried dough balls and rings to WWI servicemen abroad—by distributing free doughnuts to passersby. New Yorkers can celebrate the holiday by scoring freebies from national chains, attending events in public parks and by visiting our favorite doughnut shops in the city for a bite (or two or five) of fluffy goodness.
When is National Doughnut Day?
