Time Out says

Tantalise your taste buds with modern Mexican eats and locally made vino at this surprising Yarra Valley gem

Planning a trip to the Yarra Valley? If you're after a wine and dining experience that's a bit more out-of-the-box, No.7 is the place to book. It's the fourth restaurant in the Stones of the Yarra Valley and Meletos family, with head chef Joel Bowers dishing up a regional Mexican-inspired menu paired with No.7's impressive selection of locally made and international wines.

Once a cabinet makers' factory, the high-ceilinged space was converted into a working in-house winery in 2019, resplendent with antique pieces from Italy, wine presses and thoughtful styling. It initially functioned as the home of an urban winemakers' project for young grape fiends to come together, learn and launch their labels.

Four years on, the unique venue now operates primarily as a restaurant and wine supplier, housing several separate dining areas, including a lush sunny courtyard; an elegant backroom among the barrels and chandeliers (where all the wine magic happens); and intimate seating by the bar. Yes, it's a wine lover's dream – especially if you like the organic, low-intervention stuff – but it's also an award-winning spot for food.

Unique for the region, the kitchen is dishing up some of the tastiest Mexican-influenced fare in the state – best enjoyed via the set menu option at $80 a head. Tuck into share plates like tlayuda (a traditional Oaxacan-style tostada) topped with camote, chickpea, baked ricotta; saucisson with guindillas peppers; chicken asado skewers with nectarine salsa; and chilli peppers stuffed with charcoal zucchini, manchego and pesto. On a fun day out winery-hopping across the region, it doesn't get much better than this.

Depending on the season, dessert might come in the form of a Basque cheesecake singing with the summery taste of fresh, local peaches, or a buñuelo (fried dough fritter) with chocolate mousse.

Whether you drop in for a tasting experience, a special occasion or a casual lunch date, the warm and friendly service team is always happy to share a story and a splash of something delicious. There's even a fancy drinks trolley serving up some fine drops of Amaro and rare spirits from around the globe, if you'd like a digestif to send you on your way. Find out more and make a reservation at the website.
