There are so many ways we can show our love for our city, some more unusual than others. For example, you can send a loving email to your favourite tree or you can wear socks that match the seats on trams. Or, you can simply support our local bars or restaurants by enjoying a fun night out on the town. Either way, if you're a fiercely passionate Melburnian who wants to spread city pride, read on. A local fragrance company has crafted a quintessentially Melbourne perfume, inspired by a scent that is synonymous with what makes our city so great – our beloved trams.

No, not the actual smell of a tram – we wouldn't blame you for turning your nose up at the idea of smelling like a mode of public transport. Local perfumery Flâner has curated a unique blend of scents to create a perfume inspired by tram tracks, specifically, with notes of asphalt, tar and petrichor (the smell of concrete after rain). This mixture combines to create a fragrance that is inspired by our urban surrounds and designed to evoke thoughts of the city of Melbourne.

Flâner has launched the new fragrance, named Sonic Silver, to mark the opening of their flagship store in Fitzroy's Gertrude Street. Co-founder Andrew Hardeman said the scent had been decades in the making, taking two years to formulate before it was the perfect Melbourne olfactory experience.

“We included base notes of asphalt and tar to capture the beauty in Melbourne’s raw grittiness," Hardeman says. "We also included a note called petrichor which smells like concrete after rain to represent the transient Melbourne weather."

Flâner has dubbed the fragrance as avant-garde, and colour us intrigued and ready to give it a whiff. If your curiosity is also piqued, you can find out more about the fragrance here. A 100ml bottle is priced at $229, or a 50ml bottle is priced at $159. Or, if you're wanting to try a sample, it's just $9.
