If you’ve never heard of A Club Called Rhonda (do you live under a cactus?), you’re in for a real treat. This legendary party, held once a month at Los Globos in Silver Lake, packs the house with revelers dressed to see, be seen, dance, flirt, have their picture taken (this, they love) and let their freak flags fly. You won’t find a better-dressed crowd anywhere in the city: attendees are often plucked out of the (long, long) line down the block based on the creativity of their ensembles. (Case in point, one group of regulars always coordinate their costumes with themes such as Bionic Bayou, Versailles Samurai, Blood Red Western or Denim Doppleganger. This is not a fashion show you want to miss.) It’s one of the most diverse and dazzling dance scenes in LA, where partiers—be they queer, straight, young, old, male, female or somewhere in between—can cut loose and get high on some pretty incredible dance music (among other things)—think DJ talent along the lines of Jacques Renault, Metro Area and Peanut Butter Wolf. Aside from scoring instant entry with killer outfits, partygoers can also expect free Jell-O shots to keep the energy up, as well as signs bearing Rhondaisms like “Take it off—it’s OK” and “Freedom feels good,” which are up for grabs at the end of the night for those who sweat it out ‘til the bitter end. To Rhonda’s credit, it’s pretty amazing that the city’s hottest dance party is also one of its most inclusive—everyone is fabulous here and everyone is welcome.
We asked photographer Angie Smith—known for her striking and intimate portraits—to capture all that is A Club Called Rhonda over five months worth of parties, and she saw a lot. Check out her photos, then start dreaming up your outfit for Rhonda's next blowout.
