Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are known for providing family-friendly fun and a temporary escape from an otherwise terrifying world. Today, the parks announced new precautions that signal a shift toward making safety a priority.
The parks will instate these safety measures starting today:
- "Vapor Wake" dogs will patrol the parks accompanied by handlers. The dogs are trained to sniff out explosives.
- Visitors ages 14 and older will not be allowed to wear masks into the park. There will be no more toy gun sales or possession allowed in the park.
- There will be a mandatory bag check, followed by a second round where guests will be randomly selected to walk through a metal detector.
“We continually review our comprehensive approach to security and are implementing additional security measures, as appropriate,” a Disneyland official told the OC Register.
To be clear, security isn't just a California issue—Disney World in Florida is adopting the same precautions. And considering Disneyland and California Adventure host about 25 million visitors a year, it makes sense that the parks would want to take precautions. Universal Studios Hollywood has also been testing using metal detectors during special events such as their Halloween Horror Nights.
