Merton Abbey Mills is one of those tranquil locations that have no business being associated with the frenetic city they are technically part of. Occupying a former mill on the banks of the River Wandle (once a hub for the textiles industry), the Mills offer an enclave of shops with an obvious focus on arts and crafts together with services (such as a stellar yoga centre) independent cafes and cosy pubs. There's an alternative market every weekend featuring hand-made goodies, as well as a calendar of live music and family fun days. One of the biggest draws, however, is the Wheelhouse Pottery. Beginners and more confident students (age 6+) are welcomed and instructed by longtime potters, Claire Bradfield and Stephen Llewellyn. Workshops are open all weekend and by appointment during the week. Prices start at a reasonable £15.
