What is it?
A favourite of local artists, this formal Arts and Crafts garden, created between 1910 and 1925 by Thomas Mawson for soap magnate Lord Leverhulme and restored in the 1990s, is a little-known part of Hampstead Heath. In late spring the raised, covered pergola – as long as Canary Wharf is tall – is festooned with wisteria, but great views of London are to be had at any time of year.
Why go?
If our recommendation isn't enough then trust the judges. The Pergola won a gold in the 2024 London in Bloom Awards and the Hill Garden also came out top for small park in the same awards. Decorated with vines and flowers, it is a pretty magical place, whether in the green of summer or in the autumn gold and offers a slice of tranquillity right in the heart of London.
Don't miss:
While you're there, why not explore the wider parts of Hampstead Heath too? There's lots to do including swimming in one of the famous ponds or climbing Parliament Hill.
When to visit:
Open daily from 8:30am-6pm
Ticket info:
Entry to the garden is free.
Time Out tip:
There are lots of great pubs around Hampstead Heath. So, once you're done exploring we'd suggest you sit back and relax with a drink. Try Horseshoe, The Flask or Spaniard's Inn.
