Apparently still ongoing, the multimillion-pound redevelopment of Stables Market (that hit its peak in 2010) has changed the face of the market's once boho collection of stalls and shops. Efforts have been made to avoid a completely sterile shopping experience – and there's still something of a ramshackle feel to the vintage, retro, furniture, antique and crafty gift shops that populate the newly spruced up units. Food stalls (largely Asian takeaways) are still a feature, as is the re-housed Proud gallery and bar – now bigger than ever and occupying the original Horse Hospital where the horses that once pulled canal barges were cared for.
