Series one, episode two
‘We’ve made a list of people who might have done it.’ Probably not what a detective wants to hear from a bereaved family, but that’s what DS Miller and DI Hardy get from the Latimers tonight.

And it's not as if the cops don't have their own problems as this twisty murder saga continues. They’re just not getting on. ‘Keep your brooding bullshit shtick to yourself,’ moans Olivia Colman’s Miller at one point. She, like everyone else, has noticed that Hardy, with his dark glower and thinly veiled personal dysfunction, is very much an archetypal television cop. Pretty meta for an ITV procedural, but then ‘Broadchurch’ is shaping up to be something a little more complex and satisfying.

The cast are routinely superb (we’re particularly looking forward to something unforgiveable from Vicky McClure’s wheedling tabloid hack Karen), the confusion and grief is all too believable and the conclusion remains uncertain. Great stuff. Phil Harrison
