Best places to go ice skating in London this winter

Skaters gonna skate at the capital’s best ice rinks

Advertising

Is there anything more wonderfully wintry than wrapping up warm, pulling on some ice skates and gliding around a frosty slab of ice with your loved ones? Each winter, London fills up with pop-up rinks, from legendary venues like Somerset House to exciting new ones like Glide at Battersea Power Station. At all, you’ll find festive vibes ramped up to the max, especially come December – and a lot of fellow Londoners vying for a spot on the ice. Book in advance to guarantee you can show off your best ice moves (or your ability to stay upright, at the very least). Here are some of the best rinks to soar across this winter.

How much does it cost to go ice skating?

The cost to skate at London’s various permanent and pop-up ice rinks varies quite significantly. This year’s cheapest option is Queens Skate Dine and Bowl, where adult tickets are available from £8 (during off-peak hours). The most expensive adult ticket we found is £26, for peak hours at Skate at Somerset House. For cheaper tickets, consider visiting at less popular times.

Best outdoor ice skating rinks

  • Aldwych

Somerset House’s iconic ice rink has become a Christmas tradition for Londoners and visitors heading to the capital for some festive cheer. There’s good reason – gliding (or, at least, attempting to) around the rink, gazing upon the Georgian architecture and 40ft Christmas tree feels like you’ve skated onto a movie set, ready to be watched by families settling in for their post-turkey food coma.

There’s more to this rink than just skating, though. This year, pop-up gourmet dining spot The Chalet and rosé brand Whispering Angel’s skate lounge will return to keep you fuelled up. Skate Lates are also back, with DJ takeovers from Rinse FM, Daytimers’ Rohan Rakhit, Dankie Sounds, and Jay Jay Revlon. Shelter Boutique are bringing a pop-up shop of pre-loved clothing, homewares and gifts for you to shop til you drop at, while there’ll also be special chilled-out sessions for those who want to skate but need things to be a little quieter, and coaching for skaters of all ages at the skate school and kids’ skate club.

Westfield London Ice Rink
Westfield London Ice Rink

This year, the Westfield London rink will have a touch of the tropical about it, as it celebrates the release of Disney’s ‘Moana 2’. Pretend your gliding across the Oceania seas as you skate around the ice – a much cheerier prospect than frosty London. You’ll also be doing good with every visit, with 25p from each ticket sold going to sustainability platform Everclime, with the partnership helping offset CO2 emissions to help our planet.

Best indoor ice skating whatever the weather

  • Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf shakes off its business image a little with the return of its long-running ice rink this winter. From October through to late February, you’ll be able to spin and drift around the 1,200-square-metre arena, so whether you’re looking for a pre-Christmas activity or a fun way to kick off the New Year, this bad boy’s got you covered. Talking of covered, the whole thing is under a canopy that means not even the unpredictable British weather can spoil a sesh here. There’ll also be a ringside bar and themed DJ nights to ramp the good vibes up even higher.

  • Queensway

Queens Skate Dine Bowl has been around in different forms since the 1930s, so skating here is really continuing a London tradition. Nowadays, it also offers curling as well as ice skating (plus bowling and AR darts…). When it comes to slicing your way across the rink, you can join a public session or sign up for a class to hone your skills. When you’re done, head to the on-site Meat Liquor for a treat. If you can, save your visit for a Monday or Tuesday (outside of school holidays), when you can skate or bowl for just £8 per person

  • Streatham

Streatham’s rink was first opened in the area in 1931, where it stood for 80 years before getting a much-needed renovation in 2013. Both pros and novices of all ages can use the rink, with classes in skating and ice hockey also available. It’s part of the Better leisure centre group, so you’ll need to download the app to pre-book a public skating session. If festive fun is what you’re looking for, you’ll definitely find more elsewhere, but this Olympic-sized rink does offer plenty of space – more for getting to grips with the ice than Christmas flair.

Opening times: Mon-Fri 6am-10pm; Sat-Sun 7am-7pm

Price: You’ll need a membership – unlimited monthly memberships start at £30.20 a month
