Allegedly the longest market in Europe, Walthamstow Market proper operates between 8am-5pm Tuesdays to Fridays and until 5.30pm on Saturdays. You can drop by to pick up fruit and veg as well as household goods and clothes. On Saturdays, you’re more likely to find extra traders selling antiques, street food and handmade goods. Arriving early is advised as some traders pack up before closing time.
Everything changes on Sundays when a farmers’ market takes over from 10am-2pm – perfect if you’re in the mood for organic eggs, artisanal cheeses, cooked sausages and fresh game when in season. Close by you’ll find Wood Street Indoor Market, a horseshoe-shaped institution brimming with antiques, old books and magazines and locals with cockney accents. Alim Kheraj
