Gerard Allt and Craig Carruthers’ cool, convivial knitting shop goes from strength to strength. A laid-back atmosphere (think squishy sofas and a drinks fridge), coupled with an amazing selection of wools and yarns, makes this salon-style shop a one-off in the knitting world. There’s a special emphasis on British independent yarn producers, while more unusual offerings include glossy vinyl ‘jelly yarn’. Knitting patterns from the 1950s and ’60s are stocked, along with a decent range of how-to books. With regular film screenings, knitting get-togethers (including a sociable Sunday ‘Knit Roast’ in a pub) and beginners’ classes, there’s no excuse not to get crafty.
