Just over the road from Clapham Common tube, this café is where it all started for the
guys behind Aussie-themed Brickwood – a mini-chain than now boasts outlets in several
desirable ‘hoods. Spread over two floors (plus a yard out back with alfresco seating), the
interior has a rough-and-ready shack-like vibe, while the menu is big on brunch. Rolling
along until 3pm, this prime-time offer deals in colourful ideas ranging from ‘The Butcher’
(a take on the full English) to wild mushrooms on brioche with poached egg, spinach, pine
nuts and torn ricotta – although most eyes are on the signature Brickwood burritos
(scrambled eggs, potato hash, pulled pork, salsa etc) and the grilled sourdough toasties,
including a winning four-cheese version. Other typically Aussie assets include tip-top
coffee, decent bread, cheery service and a toe-tapping playlist.
