What's the deal with… Brooke Candy?

Wow – who is that?
Here’s your jaw, I think you dropped it. That’s Brooke Candy, a former heroin addict, stripper and vampire rock star (in a B-movie called ‘Bloodrape’). Now she’s on the cusp of fame as an outspoken rapper. Check out her new video ‘Opulence’, styled by Nicola Formichetti, who’s worked with Lady Gaga.

Have we a new Gaga on our hands?
Not really – BC’s more like a composite of Lil’ Kim, Madonna, Marilyn Manson, Camille Paglia, The Mighty Boosh, Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes, Nicki Minaj and Rita Repulsa from ‘Power Rangers’.

Sorry, did you say ‘The Mighty Boosh’?
Yes, there’s definitely something a bit Noel Fielding about the ‘Opulence’ video. Maybe it’s the bit where she transforms into a scary glitter demon. Don’t show it to your kids, though – it is, shall we say, a little racy.

Racy like how?
Well, it starts with Brooke snapping a guy’s neck with her stripper heels and stuffing a thousand dollars into his mouth.

And this is going to break the mainstream?
Quite probably: Brooke’s got mega-producers like Diplo and Sia on side, and designers and photographers (including ‘Opulence’ director Steven Klein) lining up to work with her. She’s also got a massive online following, partly thanks to her in-your-face brand of sex-positive feminism. Don’t expect Candy to melt away any time soon.

The bottom line: Whatever you do, don’t call her sweet.
