In a nutshell…
A sparkling paradise that’s home to the hottest gigs in all of London.
Where is it?
It’s right in the heart of Hackney, but tucked away from all the madness of Mare Street on a little side street called Villette Street.
What’s the vibe?
If you’re into new music then Moth is the place for you. Hotly-tipped bands like swoony indie stars Whitney, art-pop newcomer Oscar and everyone’s favourite Madrid garage-rock girl gang Hinds have all graced the stage since the venue opened last year.
What makes it a great venue?
It’s a venue of two extremes. To get into the live room, you have to walk through the wood-panelled bar, which is often populated by old bingo-playing east Londoners. Once you’re through, you’re immersed in a gold wonderland – the ceiling is like a glittery sky, while the stage is decorated with gold foil curtains.
What’s the booze situation?
Drinks are standard prices as London goes – both a pint and a house spirit and mixer are £4, while a small house glass of wine is only 10p more. This is east London so if you fancy a craft beer, you’ve got the option of Pressure Drop, Kernel or Five Points, but don’t expect any pretentiously named cocktails.
What’s the weirdest thing to happen at a gig there?
Har Mar Superstar once popped behind the bar mid-gig to help himself to the supplies, and Connan Mockasin, his dad and James Blake all shared the stage once.
