Based in Alaska and drawing on its harsh landscape for his music, award-winning US composer Adams has an all-embracing approach to classical composition that takes in electronics and unusual percussion instruments. One of several works he’s written recently designed to be played outdoors, ‘Across the Distance’ is a new piece for 64 horn players – amateurs and professionals. Each musician performs seperately across the Southbank site at this London premiere, letting visitors discover music among the centre’s brutalist blocks.
