One of the world's finest altoists, Watson came to prominence in a late-'70s incarnation of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and has remained at the top of the pile ever since. Whether he's playing chunky chamber jazz with the 29th Street Saxophone Quartet, or fluid, dazzling chunks of hard bop with his own bands, he's a compelling draw.
