After a technically smart but seemingly uninvolving first 20 minutes, this ambitious, fragmented comedy drama, charting the experiences of doctors, patients, family and friends in a busy maternity ward, kicks in with a vengeance. Covering all manner of medical, ethical, political and psychological issues to do with pregnancy, the film embraces slapstick, satire, social comment, suspense, melodrama and even documentary footage, as it mounts an unexpectedly affecting tribute to the courage and determination of women, whatever their take on motherhood.
