No, this is not a fly-on-the-wall doc about Kimye’s baby. It’s a tough Scandi crime drama about the rise of a teenage skinhead in Copenhagen’s crime-ridden Nordvest neighbourhood. Unflashy and doc-like, it’s the opposite of Nordic noirs like ‘The Killing’: but in the end is possibly a little too low-key.
Two real-life siblings, Gustav and Oscar Dyekjær Giese (whose mum replied to a casting ad on Facebook), play brothers. Gustav is incredible as Casper, an 18-year-old burglar. At home, he searches estate agents’ websites for photos of homes to burgle (he’s heartbreakingly bright). On the streets, he’s pure gut: knowing instinctively when to front up and when to run (‘look them straight in the eyes’ he tells his kid brother before a deal). Shot on a hand-held camera in a hundred shades of grey, ‘Northwest’ never quite picks up the pace. But the lack of glamour makes this a harder watch than cops in nice knitwear chasing around after serial killers.
