Bjork: Biophilia Live

This carefully crafted concert film plays it pretty straight with Björk’s September 2013 Alexandra Palace gig. That is, apart from the bits where we’re transported to an erupting volcano, the surface of the sun, or deep underwater among weirdly colourful marine life (in competition with Björk’s multi-coloured shockwave hair and sponge dress for most out-there wildlife on display).

The Icelandic musician’s ‘Biophilia’ project (album, gigs, apps etc) embraces the connections between music and nature, and so the live show and film both reflect that, showing us images of the Milky Way and the Earth’s shifting tectonic plates, and even opening with a voiceover from none other than nature doc hero David Attenborough. Exactly what those links between music and nature are is not totally clear, but there’s an entrancing harmony between what we see and hear.

At the centre of it all is Björk herself, saying the odd hello and delivering one endearingly weird shout-out: ‘This one is to the Faroe Islands and Greenland! Come on!’
