There used to be two options for Londoners when it came to fireworks at New Year's Eve. You could pitch up on the banks of the Thames mid-afternoon to guard a spot like a holiday-maker protecting a sun-lounger armed with only a towel and a dose of passive-aggressiveness. Alternatively, you could just stay at home and get drunk instead.
But British queueing rules aside, Londoners have it good when it comes to New Year's Eve displays. It's not surprising then, that things get busy. Last year saw the event become ticketed for the first time, which meant less of a mad scramble and more time for fun, with the hustle and bustle boiled down to a few minutes in October. Today is that day again.
Tickets go on sale today (October 2) at midday. You can buy up to four tickets each, so prepare for a Glastonbury-like huddle around electrical devices come lunchtime. They're only £10, which leaves you with more than enough money left to keep the celebrations going by trying to squeeze into a club night you didn't remember to buy tickets for. Best get on that too, then.
