If it has a reputation for being hard to find, that’s perhaps Ye Olde Mitre was, for centuries, in an entirely different bit of the country – technically speaking. Dating back to 1546, the site was owned by the Bishop of Ely (the city near Cambridge) and was therefore declared part of Cambridgeshire. Licensees used to have to trek there for their licence! The quirk was dispatched with in the 1960s, though the cosy old pub is still tricky to locate, situated as it is down an inconspicuous alleyway. Once you do find the place, you’ll be rewarded with all the low beams, tasty pub snacks and ice-cold pints you could desire. No wonder Queen Elizabeth I and Lord Chancellor Christopher Hatton reportedly boogied around a cherry tree in the back garden.

Those snacks really are worth checking out – their cheese and tomato toastie is one for the history books.
