The best salad bars in KL

Where to eat your greens and enjoy it

Advertising

Sure, you can toss lettuce in a bowl with some meat and dressing and call it a salad when you’re at home, but it can’t beat going to a sleek salad bar and have an attendant assemble your green meal for you with all the superfoods you want. These places in town are out to prove that eating your greens doesn't need to be boring.

Goodness Greens Café
Goodness Greens Café

This child-friendly offshoot by La Juiceria has a seemingly endless list of ingredients to build your salad, and you can even have it rest on a bed of warm potatoes or brown rice if you don't fancy lettuce. The salads are available in three sizes: Petit (RM16.90), Medium (RM20.90) and Grand (RM24.90); the difference between each is the number of mains and toppings you get to choose, so if you’re content with just four mains, a base and a topping, just go for Petit and use the money you save on Goodness Greens’ warm vegan soups made with almond milk instead of cream. Speaking of vegan, you need to try the vegan latte.

While the full menu at Thai-Japanese restaurant Sanoook (both the Sunway and Pavilion KL outlet) boasts dishes like pad Thai, tuna steak, sushi burgers, crispy duck served with coffee sauce, and more, they also offer ready-made salad jars for those days when you can’t afford the time. There are a number of options, and each jar has a handy sticker noting its calorie count (good news for all of us struggling to keep our long-ago New Year’s resolutions).

Salad Atelier

Salad Atelier offers customisable salads which you can also turn into a sandwich if you’re hankering for a bit of bread. Once you’re ready to order, pick between fives sizes: Rabbit (RM16.40), Raccoon (RM18.40), Panda (RM20.40), Tiger (RM20.40) and Dinosaur (RM25.40). Each salad size comes with one base and four to six mains, but you get to choose two supplementary ingredients if you go with the bigger sizes, while Dinosaur gets you all that plus a prime ingredient (pick from smoked salmon, roast chicken, seared tuna and more). For dressing, we like the wasabi yoghurt and honey balsamic.

If you want to up the health ante, scan the smoothie menu and pick the 'Popeye' (baby spinach, grape, banana, apple) or 'All-In' (orange, kiwi, strawberry, banana, blueberry).

Simply Green
Simply Green

If you're coming from KLCC, Simply Green Salad at Fraser Place is about a 15-minute walk but hey, you’re burning calories right there. You can order a preset salad dish or be a healthy creative by building your own salad, sandwich or wrap.

Compared to other salad bars, Simply Green has an interesting selection of primes (read: protein), and the chicken comes in a variety of styles – poached, yakitori, lemongrass, Cajun, and basil pesto to name a few. If you’re not into chicken, there’s smoked salmon, mushroom and tofu. Simply Green also has a special soup – a choice of cauliflower, pumpkin, minestrone and mushroom. Be sure to order one of their juices.
