Here's where you and your pets can eat happily together

Sometimes the whole family wants to dine together, pooch included. We investigate the family-friendly restaurants and cafés where pets are allowed to accompany their owners.

  • Hartamas

Owned by Korean partners David Son and Liz Kim, CuBs & CuPs in Desa Sri Hartamas attracts a good crowd of pet owners. If you're here for the resident dogs, take note that Cola the Siberian Husky, Mocha the Alaskan Malamute and Nacho the Pomeranian are no longer residents at the café (they're relaxing at home now, although they pop up waggy-tailed to the café sometimes). Self-service and cleanliness are emphasised here, and that applies to cleaning up after your own dog too; the well-equipped cleaning station at the back of the café will help. Worried that your pooch will be left out while you’re having your meal? Order a bowl from the dog menu, and enjoy mealtime together. Cute.

As long as your pets are potty-trained, they’re allowed to roam around the Midwestern restaurant in Aman Suria while you dig into barbecued ribs or juicy pork shoulder chops with sweet pineapple chutney, grilled sweet peppers and classic coleslaw. We hear the curry-crusted roasted chicken breast is worth tearing into too. If doggo’s whining for food, ask the friendly staff for dog-friendly chicken breasts and hard-boiled eggs, a sure-fire hit. While all pets are welcomed, take note that you’ll have to sit outside if you’ve got a bigger dog.

  • TTDI

This family-centric eatery welcomes all members of the family, and we mean all. On a typical day, there won’t only be children running around; you’d probably also find furkids lazing around. Located on a second floor shoplot in TTDI, Alison Soup House operates from a small space, so avoid bringing large pets. The floors are tiled, which makes it easy to clean up after your four-legged friends. The menu consists of hearty homemade soups such as honey dates ABC (pork, vegetables, tofu, egg, tomato), shiitake mushroom chicken, Spicy Drunken Pork and more. Having your pets right beside you while you chow down here will make you feel doubly warm and fuzzy inside.

  • TTDI

Previously known as Boathouse, Meatology is run by Yenni Law, who gained a reputation for her steak dishes following the publication of her cookbook, also called ‘Meatology’. The restaurant remains one of the most pet-friendly places in KL – dogs receive free doggie treats and you can request a cooked meal for your furkid. Best of all, pets are allowed to dine inside; so you can both have your meal side by side. As you can expect from its name, the restaurant specialises in cooking up a range of meaty dishes like roast rack of lamb, spicy pork ribs, duck breast confit and foie gras.

This gastropub is a popular watering hole thanks to their extensive list of beers, whiskies, wine, cocktails and more; while the food selection is just as comprehensive with meaty selections including pork platters, wild boar curry and grilled meats . Both the Plaza Damansara and Bangsar outlets are easily accessible and have outdoor dining spots, where your pets are allowed. The restaurants open till late so you can have your pets tag along on your night of wining and dining.

Sid's Pub Bukit Tunku
Sid's Pub Bukit Tunku

Sid’s Pub is a haven for pet owners, despite having just a few places to sit outside. So far only dogs have made the pit stop with their owners, but other pets are more than welcome to mingle about. Of all the branches of this neighbourhood pub – TTDI, Kenny Hills, Bangsar South and Damansara Heights – we reckon the best place bring your pets and have a pint is the one in Kenny Hills: it’s calmer and has less foot-traffic to distract your pets. The menu is full of family-friendly pub grub like fish and chips, pies and roasts – enough to keep the whole family happy (including the four-legged members).
