Based in an attractive two-floor, brick-wall premises on Great Western Road by Kelvin Bridge, between a craft beer emporium and a boho deli-café, The Glasgow Vintage Co. is the kind of place where Belle and Sebastian are invariably playing on the stereo, and you’re liable on occasion to be served by a member of Camera Obscura. It’s so cool it even has a sister store of the same name in New York, taking tweed to the East Village.
Its stock is among the best and best-priced of any similar store in the city. It opened in 2011, but owners Gavin O’Brien and his wife Mari’s strong repute as second-hand traders goes back much further than that, their previous shop Watermelon (now Papercup Coffee) just up Great Western Road having been a local favourite for several years before closing in 2012, as they opted to concentrate on just one outlet.
Men and women are both catered for, with a wide range of women’s dresses, blouses, tops, jumpers, coats and accessories occupying the ground floor, and men’s jackets, jumpers, shirts, bags, hats, shoes and much else besides taking up the basement (along with spacious fitting rooms). There’s even a good range of stuff for kids.
